Riders winding up a mountain trail in Rocky Mountain National Park are the subject of this print, a scene that many early visitors to Colorado's high country would have recognized from their own trips. Congress established the park in 1915, and for years afterward, horses were often the most practical way to reach its peaks and passes, since many trails were too rough for wagons. The National Photo Company, a commercial firm that produced large numbers of scenic views for tourists, made the picture. It is worth noticing how the photographer presents riding as part of the mountain experience itself rather than as a mere means of transport.
