Rock Creek Park, the wooded valley that runs through northwest Washington, is the setting here, and the picture catches a Fourth of July horse show held there in 1914. The people and wagons lined up around the show ring reflect how central horses still were to city life before the automobile took over the streets. The photograph comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented the capital's streets, public events and holidays in the early twentieth century. Its pictures give a useful record of how Washingtonians spent a summer holiday just before the First World War.
