The view looks down on the M Street Bridge as a horse-drawn streetcar crosses the span over Rock Creek, with the tracks and roadway laid out below the camera. The bridge linked the Georgetown neighborhood to the rest of Washington, so streetcars carrying passengers across the creek were a daily sight. Horse-drawn lines operated in the capital until electric cars gradually replaced them in the 1890s and early 1900s. The overhead angle makes the bridge's structure and the creek valley easy to read, and it shows how the streetcar, the horses and the traffic shared a narrow crossing.
