Mackinac Island in Michigan's Straits region stands out for a rule that few other American towns have ever kept: no automobiles. In the years between 1890 and 1910, the island's Main Street was a working thoroughfare of horse-drawn carriages, wagons and delivery carts, and this print records that traffic at the moment the island was known for its resort hotels and summer visitors arriving by steamboat. Because the record gives no photographer, the picture is best read as a window on everyday island life before the motorcar arrived in the twentieth century.
