Riders in this National Photo Company view pause in front of a building within Rock Creek Park, the wooded valley that Congress set aside as a public park in 1890 and that became a favorite place for Washingtonians to ride. The park's bridle paths drew equestrians from across the city, and a stable or lodge like the one shown would have served them. The National Photo Company worked in Washington in the early twentieth century, documenting the capital's streets, monuments and leisure spaces for sale as postcards and prints. Its pictures are valuable today as glimpses of how residents spent their free time before the automobile dominated the park's roads.
