Riders wading through a shallow stream in Rock Creek Park show a side of the capital that many visitors never saw: a wooded valley of running water within the city. Congress set aside the park in 1890, and its winding bridle paths made it a favorite place for riding on horseback in the early twentieth century. The National Photo Company produced many views of Washington landmarks and scenic spots for tourists between about 1909 and 1932, and this scene records a leisure pursuit that was then common among the city's residents and visitors.
