Arch Rock, the granite formation in Yosemite Valley that a carriage is passing through here, was a favorite stop for visitors who came to the valley by horse-drawn coach. The photograph dates to about 1913, when the Detroit Publishing Company was producing and selling large numbers of views of American scenic and tourist sites. Its copyright notice shows the image was registered for sale as a view, and the company's photographs often captured the carriages, guides, and tour routes that defined travel in the national parks before automobiles became common. The scene shows how visitors once moved through the valley, with the horses and carriage dwarfed by the rock.
