Riders on a road in Rock Creek Park set this view apart from the park's many carriage and landscape scenes. Congress established the park in 1890, and its wooded creek valley soon drew riders who used the bridle paths and roads that wound through it. The image comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington firm that documented the capital's streets, monuments and leisure spots in the early twentieth century. Its date falls between 1909 and 1932, a period when riding remained a common pastime in the city.
