Culpeper, Virginia, was a staging ground for the Army of the Potomac in the fall of 1863, and this group portrait records a set of officers from its horse artillery, a branch that moved its cannon at a gallop behind teams of horses. The title places them in September 1863, a few months after Gettysburg, when the army was regrouping in the region. Horse artillery depended on mounted men and well-matched teams, so the officers' posture and the setting of the camp reflect a unit whose effectiveness rested on animals as much as on guns. The photograph is one of the Civil War images cataloged by the Library of Congress, which has made such camp portraits a useful record of how the officer corps presented itself during the war.
