Officers of a U.S. horse artillery brigade posed near Culpeper, Virginia, in September 1863, placing these men in one of the Army of the Potomac's main encampment areas. Horse artillery was built for speed, with guns drawn by teams and crews riding alongside cavalry, so these officers led a branch expected to move fast and fire on the march. Culpeper was a busy camp for the army through much of the war, its fields crowded with tents, wagons and picketed horses. The photograph was taken in 1863 but printed later, so its tones reflect that later work as much as the original scene.
