Horse artillery, the mounted gun crews that could keep pace with cavalry and move cannon quickly across a battlefield, is the subject here, shown on a parade ground rather than in the smoke of combat. The photograph dates from between 1861 and 1865, when the Union and Confederate armies were training and equipping large numbers of volunteers, and the print itself was made later from the original negative. Batteries of this kind relied on six-horse teams pulling guns and caissons, so the animals were as essential as the men and cannon. The picture is a useful record of how Civil War artillery was organized and moved, and of the horses that made mobile field artillery possible.
