Horse artillery, the light field guns pulled by teams that could keep pace with cavalry, is the subject here, shown on a parade ground in 1861, the first year of the Civil War. The photographer, James F. Gibson, was a Washington-area photographer born in 1828 who documented Union troops and camps in the early war years. Photographs like this one were rare in 1861, since wet-plate processing required heavy equipment and a darkroom close at hand. The image gives a sense of how much of the army's mobility depended on draft horses and teams long before motorized transport.
