Roger Fenton's 1855 salted paper print shows a field train of horse artillery in the Crimea, a detail that sets it apart from the many horse portraits on this board. Fenton, a British photographer, went to the Crimean War that year, and his camera recorded the supply and transport system that kept the army moving over the difficult ground near Sevastopol. Horses were essential to the campaign, pulling guns, carts and ammunition, and the scene reflects how much the war depended on animal labor. Salted paper printing, with its soft tones, gives the image an unhurried, almost quiet look for a battlefield subject.
