Measuring just 7 by 3.6 centimeters, this chromolithograph shows French horse artillery in the uniforms of 1853, a few years after Napoleon III had proclaimed the Second Empire. The card carries the title "Illust'd Sweet Caporal," which marks it as a cigarette-brand insert of the 1880s, when such pictures were tucked into packs and widely collected. It was later pasted into a souvenir album inscribed to Alton B. Cusick. Its brightly colored scenes of soldiers and mounts are a useful glimpse of the military dress of the period.
