Bell tents and the men of the Royal Horse Artillery make up this Crimean encampment, photographed in 1855 by Roger Fenton, the British photographer who worked in the Crimea that year. The record links the scene to John James Brandling, a British officer whose military service is noted in the subject list. The salted paper process gives the print its soft, warm tones, and the long exposures of the day meant that nothing in the frame could move quickly. The camp therefore looks ordered and still, with the horses and tents set out in neat rows. Fenton's Crimean work is among the earliest sustained photographic records of a military campaign.
