This portrait shows Captain King of the Royal Horse Artillery, photographed in Crimea in 1855, with the surrounding horses and huts noted in the record. The print is on salted paper, the process Roger Fenton used during his time photographing the war, when exposures were long and equipment was cumbersome. Horse artillery units moved guns quickly over rough ground, so a mounted officer of this branch speaks to a central part of the campaign. Fenton's Crimean photographs, of which this print is part, are among the earliest sustained photographic records of a war.
