Horses and their handlers stand at the center of this 1855 view of a Royal Horse Artillery encampment in the Crimea, a subject that drew Roger Fenton's camera during the Crimean War. Fenton, who went to the peninsula that spring to record the conflict, made his pictures as salted paper prints, a process that required long exposures and left a soft, warm tone. Because the men and animals had to hold still, the scene reads as orderly and calm, though the camps around it were supporting a brutal siege. The mounted batteries were prized for their speed on the battlefield, and this image shows the daily routine that kept them ready.
