Taken near Balaklava in the Crimea, this view shows an encampment of the Royal Horse Artillery, the mounted gunners whose light batteries could move quickly enough to keep pace with cavalry. Roger Fenton made it in 1855, during the months he spent photographing the British army in the Crimean War, one of the earliest conflicts to be documented extensively with a camera. The salted paper print shows men and horses at rest between duties, a quieter side of a campaign that Fenton's pictures from this trip, widely reproduced since, helped establish in the public mind.
