Culpeper, Virginia, was a county seat in the Piedmont that changed hands several times during the war, and this group portrait records officers of a U.S. horse artillery brigade there in September 1863. Horse artillery used teams of horses to move its guns quickly alongside cavalry, so these men depended on animals as much as on their cannon. The picture was taken during the months when the Army of the Potomac was campaigning in northern Virginia, and it was printed later from the wartime negative. Its subject line places the men within the Army of the Potomac, which makes it a useful record of the officer corps in that theater.
