Saratoga Race Course, in upstate New York, has hosted thoroughbred racing since 1863 and is the oldest sporting venue of its kind still operating in the United States. This July 1913 view, made by the Bain News Service, shows the track and the crowds that filled its grandstand during the summer meet, when wealthy visitors from New York City and elsewhere came to Saratoga Springs for the racing and the resort life. Bain's wire-service photographers worked for newspapers and magazines, so pictures like this one were meant to be sent out quickly and widely. The spectators, many in summer clothes and hats, offer a useful record of how a crowd dressed and gathered at a major racing event just before the First World War.
