Horse car sports on the back track: dead broke" pairs a horsecar, the streetcar pulled by horses that carried city passengers in the 1880s, with racetrack slang, where a "dead broke" gambler has lost everything. Currier & Ives issued it around 1886 as part of its Darktown series, a set of caricatures that mocked Black urban life through exaggerated stereotype. Historians study such prints as evidence of how popular American printmakers portrayed African Americans in the decades after Reconstruction, and the offensive content is central to any reading of the image today.
