Baltimore's horsecars of the mid-1880s ran on iron rails and were pulled by teams of horses, and this view shows a double horse car, a larger vehicle than the single cars common on city lines. Horse-drawn street railways were the main form of urban transit in American cities at the time, and each line needed large stables and constant care for its animals. The date of 1885 is shown in brackets on the record, which means it is an estimate rather than a confirmed date, so the photograph is best read as a record of the period. It comes from the Frank G. Carpenter Collection, assembled by a journalist who traveled widely.
