Horse-drawn streetcars were still running in New York in 1908, a few years before electric trolleys and motor buses finally displaced them across the city. This print comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the large body of news photographs made by Bain News Service, a Manhattan agency that sold pictures to newspapers and magazines in the early twentieth century. The caption card that accompanied the negative is marked as unverified, so the exact street and conditions are not recorded, but the scene captures a transit system that was rapidly giving way to modern machines.
