A single dead horse lies on the Gettysburg battlefield in this 1863 view, a reminder that the battle's losses fell on animals as well as men. Thousands of horses were killed during the three days of fighting in early July, many by artillery fire and many more in the cavalry charges and wagon movements that shaped the battle. This print is numbered 226 in the Civil War Photograph Collection and was printed from a glass negative, probably some time after the original exposure. Photographers working in the weeks after Gettysburg often recorded the abandoned ground and carcasses in the same way they recorded the dead soldiers, which makes this picture a useful record of the battle's aftermath.
