Few battlefield photographs from Gettysburg are reproduced as often as this view of a dead Confederate sharpshooter, lying on rocky ground where riflemen from both armies fought in early July 1863. The image survives as a stereograph pair on wet collodion glass plates. Its negative sleeve credits T. H. O'Sullivan, though it was long attributed to Alexander Gardner, whose team photographed the field soon after the fighting ended. Historians have argued that the body and rifle were likely repositioned before the exposure, a practice that still raises questions about how honestly war photographs recorded what they showed.
