Shown lying among the rocks where he fell, this Confederate sharpshooter is one of the best-known images of the dead from the Gettysburg battlefield. The Library of Congress holds three copy negatives made from one half of a original stereograph glass negative. The negative sleeve names Alexander Gardner, who claimed the view in his *Sketch Book*, but historian William Frassanito credits Timothy O'Sullivan, so the authorship is still debated. The picture is a sober record of the cost of the fighting in early July 1863.
