A dead Confederate sharpshooter lying among the boulders of Devil's Den gives this glass negative its particular subject. Devil's Den, a jumble of granite outcrops on the southern end of the Gettysburg battlefield, was fought over in early July 1863, and its rocks offered good cover for riflemen on both sides. The negative is a wet collodion plate, a process that required photographers to coat, expose and develop each plate within minutes, so the scene was recorded close to the fighting. The image was formerly attributed to Alexander Gardner, a photographer who worked at Gettysburg that summer.
