A dead Confederate sharpshooter lying on the right of the Confederate line at Gettysburg is the subject here, preserved as a pair of wet collodion glass negatives from 1863. Alexander Gardner, who had worked with Mathew Brady, was among the photographers who went over the battlefield in the weeks after the fighting in early July 1863, recording the dead as well as the ground where they fell. The picture was made as a stereograph, two slightly offset views meant to be seen together through a viewer for a three-dimensional effect. Historians have long debated how far such scenes were arranged for the camera, so the rocks and the body's position are worth studying closely.
