A dead Confederate sharpshooter lies at the foot of Round Top, near Devil's Den, in this stereograph pair, and the caption on its negative sleeve reads "All over now." Alexander Gardner's team photographed the Gettysburg battlefield in the weeks after the fighting of July 1863, and the record also credits James F. Gibson. The scene is among the best known images from the battlefield, though historians have argued that the body was posed for the camera, a practice that drew debate when the photographs were exhibited in New York later that year.
