Shaded woods at the foot of Round Top, the wooded hill south of Gettysburg, form the subject of this view made in July 1863, the month of the battle. Round Top's slopes saw hard fighting on July 2, when Union troops held Little Round Top against Confederate assaults. The glass negative was made by the wet collodion process, which required plates to be coated and exposed before they dried, and it was sized for stereoscopic viewing. Early records credited the photograph to Alexander Gardner, an attribution now listed as former.
