Little Round Top, the rocky hill south of Gettysburg, is the subject here, pictured as it looked in July 1863, when the battlefield was still raw from the fighting. Union troops defended its slopes on July 2, and the hill became one of the most fiercely contested ground of the three-day battle. This wet collodion glass negative is part of the Library of Congress's Civil War collection, and its sleeve caption reads "Battlefield of Gettysburg Little Round Top mountain." Earlier catalogs credited the picture to Alexander Gardner, who photographed the field that summer, though that attribution has since been revised.
