Round Top is one of the two wooded hills that rise southeast of the town of Gettysburg, the other being Little Round Top, and this glass stereograph negative shows it as it looked in July 1863, when the Union and Confederate armies fought the battle that took its name from the town. The hill's rocky, tree-covered slopes made it a key piece of the Union line's southern flank, and the scene here records the ground in the weeks after the fighting. The negative is part of the Library of Congress Civil War glass negative collection and is credited to Alexander Gardner, though that attribution has been revised over time, so the photographer's identity is worth treating with some caution.
