The record places this view on Round Top, the wooded hill south of Gettysburg where fighting raged on July 2 and 3, 1863, and shows the earthen breastworks soldiers threw up there. The record credits T. H. O'Sullivan, who worked on the battlefield that July, and the three surviving plates are variant views of a stereograph, meant to be seen as a pair through a stereoscope for a sense of depth. Wet collodion glass plates required a photographer to coat, expose and develop each image while the plate was still wet, so fieldwork like this was slow and laborious. The fortifications also show how much digging the troops did before and after the fighting.
