The picture shows the fortifications on Round Top, the wooded hill south of the Gettysburg battlefield, where Union and Confederate soldiers fought in early July 1863. Photographer James F. Gibson made the image in the weeks after the battle, when the field was still littered with the works and debris of the fighting. It survives as a stereograph pair, two side-by-side glass negatives that, viewed through a stereoscope, give the earthworks a sense of depth. The wet collodion process of the period required long exposures, so the scene is still and empty of the soldiers who had dug and defended these lines.
