The name on this view, the Slaughter Pen at the foot of Round Top, refers to a rocky, boulder-strewn ground south of Gettysburg where fighting raged during the battle in early July 1863. Alexander Gardner, whose team worked the battlefield within days of the fighting, made the picture as a stereograph, a pair of slightly offset images that create depth when viewed through a stereoscope. Because the photograph was made on a wet collodion glass plate, its detail records the scene as the photographers found it in the weeks after the battle.
