Slaughter Pen is the low, rocky ground at the foot of Little Round Top, where a stone-walled sheep pen once stood beside Plum Run. Its grim name dates to the afternoon of July 2, 1863, when Union and Confederate troops fought back and forth across these boulders and the creek bed. Heavy casualties on both sides made the spot one of the bloodiest on the battlefield in those hours. The view shows how close the fighting was to the Union defenders on the hill above, and it helps explain why this small patch of ground stayed so vivid in postwar accounts.
