The stony ground at the foot of Little Round Top, which soldiers called the slaughter pen, is the place pictured here, with Confederate dead lying where they fell during the fighting of July 2, 1863. Photographers who worked the field after Gettysburg recorded scenes like this, and the stereograph pair was meant to be viewed through a stereoscope so the bodies appeared in depth. The wet collodion glass negative was formerly credited to Alexander Gardner, whose team documented the battlefield. Pictures like this showed many Northern viewers the war's dead in a way newspaper accounts could not.
