Taken at the edge of the Rose woods on July 5, 1863, three days after the fighting there, this stereograph shows Confederate dead still lying where they fell. The Rose farm and its woods were among the hard-fought ground on the second day at Gettysburg, and burial parties had not yet reached every part of the field when this view was made. Battlefield photographers of the period often recorded the cost of battle in such scenes, and this one is valued today for that stark record. It survives as a pair of glass negatives, and while it was once credited to Alexander Gardner, the photographer's identity is now uncertain.
