Rather than the Culp's Hill dead its original caption suggests, this stereograph shows Confederate soldiers gathered for burial at the southwestern edge of the Rose Woods, near the Wheatfield, where fierce fighting took place on July 2. Mumper & Co., a Gettysburg photography firm, issued the card, and the scene is dated July 5, 1863, as Lee's army was pulling back from the field. Burial details worked across the battlefield through the summer, and many of the dead were later moved to the national cemetery dedicated at Gettysburg in November 1863. The corrected location and date come from the research of historian William A. Frassanito.
