Titled for the day the Confederate dead were gathered for burial, July 5, 1863, this stereograph shows a field near the Emmitsburg Road, a few days after Union and Confederate forces fought at Gettysburg from July 1 to 3. The record credits Alexander Gardner, whose team documented the battlefield in the weeks after the fighting, and it survives as two glass negatives that print the left and right halves of a stereo pair. Viewed through a stereoscope, the pair gave the scene a sense of depth, which made images of the dead unusually immediate for viewers far from the battlefield.
