Taken on July 5, 1863, two days after the fighting ended, this stereograph pair shows Confederate dead lying at the edge of the Rose Woods at Gettysburg. The photographer, James F. Gibson, worked on the battlefield in the days after the battle, when burial parties were still clearing the ground. Made on wet collodion glass plates, the two halves were meant to be seen through a stereoscope, which gave the scene a sense of depth and brought the aftermath of the battle into parlors across the North. A third, variant view in the same set records the ground from a slightly different position.
