Dead Confederate soldiers lie in the open ground of the Gettysburg battlefield, with an orchard visible beyond them, a view that was rare for the public to see at the time. The image was made in July 1863, just after the battle, when photographers working for the Gardner studio, including James F. Gibson, went over the field to document it. Because it survives as a stereograph pair of two wet collodion glass negatives, it was meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, giving the scene a sense of depth. Its unflinching record of the dead helped shape how Northern audiences understood the cost of the fighting.
