Among the boulders of Devil's Den, a rocky outcrop on the southern edge of the Gettysburg battlefield, a Confederate sharpshooter lies dead where he fell during fighting on July 2, 1863. Photographers working the field soon after the battle recorded such scenes before burial details could clear them. The image survives as a wet collodion glass negative, a process that required quick exposure and development, and it was long credited to Alexander Gardner, though that attribution is now considered uncertain. Note how the body sits against the stony ground, a reminder of the sharpshooters who fought from such perches.
