Devil's Den, the boulder-strewn ridge southwest of Little Round Top, is the setting, and the bodies among the rocks are Confederate dead from the fighting there on July 2, 1863. The picture was made within days of the battle as a stereograph, two slightly offset plates meant to be viewed together for a sense of depth. It has long been credited to Alexander Gardner, whose team photographed the battlefield in the days after the fighting, though that attribution is now considered uncertain, a reminder of how loosely early battlefield work was credited.
