Devil's Den, the jumble of granite boulders south of Little Round Top, is the setting, and the dead man lies among the rocks where Confederate sharpshooters had fired on Union lines during the fighting of July 2, 1863. Alexander Gardner's team made this wet collodion glass negative in the days after the battle, and it was published under the caption "The Home of a Rebel Sharpshooter." Historians have long noted that the scene was arranged, with the body and rifle positioned for the camera, which makes the picture as much a lesson in how battlefield photographs were made as a record of the dead.
