Devil's Den is a jumble of granite boulders at the southern end of the Gettysburg battlefield, and this 1909 view shows the rocky ground that gave Union sharpshooters and Confederate attackers cover during the fighting of July 2, 1863. Forty-six years after the battle, veterans and monument builders were actively shaping the field, though the terrain itself would have looked much as it did when men fought among the rocks. Notice how the scattered stones made the outcrop both a natural fortress and a deadly obstacle for anyone trying to cross it.
