This view is dated July 12, 1913, when the fiftieth-anniversary reunion of the Battle of Gettysburg was still filling the fields with canvas. Tens of thousands of Union and Confederate veterans gathered there that summer, and the tent city they occupied was laid out much like the battle's old lines, with the camps sharing the same ground where the two armies had fought in 1863. The reunion was among the best-known gatherings of Civil War veterans, and it drew wide press attention as the last generation of men who had fought at Gettysburg reached their seventies. Photographs like this one record how the battlefield briefly became a temporary town.
