In July 1865, three months after Lee's surrender at Appomattox effectively ended the major fighting, a camp near Gettysburg was still home to Union troops awaiting discharge. The record gives the officer's name as Hoff in the title but Huff on the negative sleeve, so the captain's identity is worth checking against military rosters. The negative was made by the wet collodion process, which required a glass plate to be coated, exposed, and developed while still moist. It was once credited to Alexander Gardner, but that attribution has been revised, so the photographer is not settled.
