The record names this view as the camp of Captain Huft at Gettysburg in 1865, two years after the battle that was fought on the fields around the town. By then Gettysburg was becoming a place of remembrance, and the Soldiers' National Cemetery had been dedicated there in November 1863. The catalog also lists African Americans among the subjects, a reminder that the postwar town and its visitors included more than the soldiers themselves. Like many images from the Civil War Photograph Collection, it shows the landscape of memory taking shape in the years just after the fighting.
