A July 1865 view of the 50th Pennsylvania Infantry's camp at Gettysburg, the town where the regiment's home state and the Union army had fought one of the war's bloodiest battles two years earlier, shows the site in a quieter period. By mid-1865 the war had ended, and many volunteer regiments were preparing to muster out, so the camp reflects a transition from combat to peacetime. The picture is a wet collodion glass negative, a process that required quick exposure and careful handling in the field. Alexander Gardner, a Scottish-born photographer known for his Civil War work, was once credited with the image, but that attribution has since been revised.
